Our Artisanal Journey

Welcome to The Soap Artisan SG, where passion meets nature to create skincare that truly nourishes. Our story began not just as a business venture, but as a personal quest for gentle, effective soap free from the synthetic chemicals often found in commercial products. Nestled in the vibrant city of Singapore, our workshop is a hub of creativity and careful craftsmanship.

We are deeply committed to the traditional cold process method, a slow but rewarding technique that preserves the beneficial properties of natural oils and creates a rich, skin-loving glycerin right in the soap bar. Every ingredient is meticulously sourced – from luxurious plant butters to pure essential oils and botanical extracts. We believe that what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body.

From our humble beginnings experimenting in a home kitchen, The Soap Artisan SG has grown into a small but dedicated team united by a love for natural living and the art of soap making. Our mission is threefold: to craft exceptional, high-quality artisanal soaps; to educate our community about the benefits of natural skincare and the cold process method; and to share the joy and satisfaction of creating something beautiful and functional with your own hands through our workshops.

We pour our hearts into every batch, ensuring each bar is cured to perfection, resulting in a soap that is not only cleansing but also a delight to use, leaving your skin feeling soft, hydrated, and happy. Thank you for joining us on this journey towards healthier, more mindful skincare.

Our Method: Nurturing Soap from Scratch

We are dedicated to the time-honoured cold process method. This traditional technique allows us to create soap bars that are rich in naturally produced glycerin and retain the beneficial properties of our premium ingredients. Here's a glimpse into our process:

An assortment of natural oils in bottles and dried herbs like chamomile and calendula petals.

1. Ingredient Selection

It all begins with sourcing the finest natural oils and butters – think olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter. We combine these with botanical extracts, clays, and pure essential oils, carefully chosen for their skincare benefits and natural origin. Quality ingredients are the foundation of a quality soap.

Hands carefully mixing ingredients in a large stainless steel bowl with a stick blender during the soap making process.

2. Saponification

This is the magical chemical reaction! We carefully combine the oils and butters with a precise amount of lye solution. When mixed, these two components undergo saponification, transforming into soap. During this process, glycerin, a natural humectant, is created, which helps to moisturise the skin.

3. Adding Naturals

Once the mixture reaches 'trace' (a pudding-like consistency), we gently incorporate natural colourants derived from plants or clays, along with pure essential oils for their therapeutic aromas and properties. We avoid artificial fragrances and dyes, keeping our soaps as close to nature as possible.

4. Pouring & Curing

The soap batter is then carefully poured into molds and insulated to allow the saponification to complete over 24-48 hours. After unmolding and cutting into bars, the soap enters the crucial curing phase. Each bar rests on drying racks for 4-6 weeks, allowing it to harden and excess water to evaporate, resulting in a longer-lasting, milder soap.

Got Questions?

Find answers to some of the most common questions about our products, workshops, and visiting our location.

Absolutely. We carefully select gentle, natural ingredients that are less likely to cause irritation compared to synthetic detergents found in many commercial soaps. We specifically formulate bars like our Calendula & Chamomile soap with ingredients known for their soothing properties, making them exceptionally mild for sensitive skin types, including those of infants and individuals prone to eczema or dryness. While we aim for maximum gentleness, we always recommend reviewing the full ingredient list on our packaging or product descriptions for any personal known allergens before use. Patch testing a small area first is also a good practice if you have particularly reactive skin.
Cold process soap making is a traditional artisanal method where plant-based oils (like olive, coconut, shea, etc.) and a carefully measured lye solution (sodium hydroxide dissolved in water) are mixed. A natural chemical reaction called saponification occurs, which converts the oils and lye into soap. Unlike melt-and-pour or hot process methods, cold process retains naturally produced glycerin, a valuable humectant that draws moisture to the skin. The soap mixture is poured into molds and then requires a crucial curing period of 4 to 6 weeks. This curing time allows the saponification process to fully complete, water to evaporate (resulting in a harder, longer-lasting bar), and the soap to become milder and gentler for the skin.
Our standard cold process soap making workshops are typically scheduled to last approximately 2 to 3 hours. This timeframe allows ample time for an introductory briefing on safety and theory, hands-on guided practice in selecting ingredients, mixing, adding natural additives, and pouring the soap batter into molds. There is also time allocated for answering questions and discussing the curing process and next steps. We ensure the pace is comfortable for participants, allowing everyone to feel confident and enjoy the creative process without feeling rushed.
